There are many types and designs of Asian cookware and dinnerware available on the market. It is rarely country specific, so one set of dishes will certainly be fine for say, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai eating.

Specialist cookware and serving dishes are by no means essential to prepare and serve Asian food, but there are products available which are both attractive and practical.

The one item I would say really is essential, for Chinese and other Far Eastern cookery, is a wok. A carbon steel one is the most robust and, once seasoned, will serve you well for years. You can, if you prefer, use a non-stick or cast iron wok but non-stick will restrict the utensils you can use and I never find that these really get hot enough, while a cast iron wok will be so heavy that you'll have difficulty lifting it off the stove. Whatever your taste, both Amazon has a good selection of varying types and prices.

Bamboo steamers come in various diameters and stack as many layers high as you like (four is probably enough). They are great for warming and serving the pancakes to accompany crispy duck or for cooking and serving dumplings or dim sum.

For serving Indian food a set of korais is attractive. These are rimless steel bowls with a slightly flat bottom and a handle at each side. Accompanying chutneys look good in pickle tray with 3 attached dishes and a central handle. It's useful to be able to hand all the chutneys around the table together.

There are plenty of dining sets available which are suitable for Chinese dining (or for that matter, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Japanese or Thai). Pretty china bowls in white, jade or perhaps a blue pattern are popular and you can often find matching tea sets, condiment dishes and chopstick rests. Of course, plain white, maybe square plates, look good for serving anything.

Another must for most Asian food is chopsticks. These come in varying types, Chinese or Japanese, and may be made of wood or plastic.
